Intermediate appellate court for civil, criminal, judicial review matters. Originally created in 1862; reconstituted by the Senior Courts Act 2016. Sits in Wellington with circuit sittings. Most appeals are heard by panels of three; full-court (5+) sittings for important constitutional or precedent-setting cases. Notable decisions: NZ Maori Council v Attorney-General [Lands case] (Treaty principles), Ngāti Apa (foreshore and seabed), Moonen (BORA proportionality framework), Lankow v Rose (de facto constructive trust four-step test).
