Should there be anonymity for people arrested for criminal offences?
(UCL Essay Questions 2015)
Stance: Yes. There should be legal anonymity for suspects until charge. Arrest is not guilt; to name suspects at that stage undermines the presumption of innocence, corrodes fairness, and distorts justice through media sensationalism. Anonymity until charge is justified and necessary. Jurisdiction: UK/ECHR, with comparative references to France, Germany, Canada. Word budget: ~750.
