Environmental policy and critical thinking
Can widespread adoption of electric vehicles significantly reduce air pollution?
LNAT Section B · Founder's essay plan
The essay question
“Can the widespread adoption of electric vehicles significantly reduce air pollution?”
The plan
Note to self: This is good but I'm worried it is more of an environmental essay than a law essay that showcases critical thinking, so change this up.
Stance
Against — EVs alone cannot significantly reduce air pollution; systemic solutions are needed.
Jurisdiction focus: Global/UK/EU (comparisons with China & US).
Word target: 750
Definitions
- Electric vehicles (EVs): Road vehicles powered solely or primarily by electric batteries (as opposed to hybrid or internal combustion engines).
- Widespread adoption: Large-scale market penetration (e.g., >50% of new vehicle sales).
- Air pollution: Harmful particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides, and volatile organic compounds — not CO₂ (climate change issue, but distinct).
- Significantly reduce: More than marginal or local reductions; sustained, systemic reductions visible at national or global level.
