The plan
Should parents have the right to opt their children out of sex education classes?
Stance: Against (parents should not have this right) — strongest for Oxford since it leans on autonomy, rights, and social cohesion.
Definitions
- Parents: legal guardians responsible for upbringing, but not absolute arbiters of education (subject to state law and child rights).
- Sex education classes: formal, curriculum-mandated instruction on reproduction, consent, relationships, and health.
- Opt-out right: a parental prerogative to withdraw children from state-mandated classes, prioritising parental conscience over collective educational standards.
