Should restrictions be placed on strike rights rather than limiting CEO compensation?
The plan
Stance
Against — restrictions should not be placed on strike rights; focus can justifiably be on CEO compensation or other structural reforms.
Definitions
- Strike rights: The legally protected ability of workers to withhold labour collectively as a bargaining tool. Recognised under ILO Conventions and often framed as a fundamental democratic right.
- Restrictions: Legal limitations such as minimum service requirements, notice periods, sector bans, or punitive penalties.
- CEO compensation: Executive remuneration including salary, bonuses, stock options. Often criticised when disproportionate to median worker pay.
- Rather than: Sets up a binary. This essay rejects the assumption that worker rights should be curtailed to address inequality or efficiency instead of regulating excessive executive pay.
