Should public figures have the same privacy rights as ordinary citizens?

LNAT Section B · Founder's essay plan

The essay question

Should public figures have the same privacy rights as ordinary citizens?

The plan

Stance: AGAINST (public figures should not have the same level of privacy rights as ordinary citizens).

Jurisdiction focus: UK / ECHR (Art. 8 v Art. 10). Word budget: 750.

Definitions

  • Public figures: Individuals who, by choice or role, hold positions of public influence (politicians, celebrities, high-ranking officials, business magnates).
  • Privacy rights: Legal and moral claims to control over personal information, home life, communications (ECHR Art. 8).
  • Same as ordinary citizens: Equal, undifferentiated rights — i.e., a politician would have the same shield as a private citizen.
  • Framing choice: Here, "same" means undifferentiated. The essay will argue that public interest requires limits to privacy for public figures.
