"It is right that students should contribute to the cost of their degrees." Do you agree?
The plan
Stance
FOR — students should contribute, but within limits, because fairness, sustainability, and shared responsibility require some personal contribution.
Definitions
- Students: Individuals enrolled in higher education institutions, usually post-18.
- Contribute: Bearing some financial responsibility — whether via tuition fees, deferred loan repayments, or other direct costs.
- Cost of degrees: The expense of teaching, facilities, staff salaries, and research infrastructure, often subsidised by the state.
- Right: Normatively justified on grounds of fairness, sustainability, and distributive justice.
Assumptions Under Challenge
My assumption is that it is possible for students to contribute to their degrees without increasing inequality — I will assume this is true and briefly explain why.
- Main assumption: That higher education is not merely a public good but also a private benefit, justifying student contribution.
- Further assumptions:
1. That students have the capacity (present or future) to repay contributions. 2. That requiring contributions will not undermine access or social mobility. 3. That cost-sharing aligns with justice, rather than entrenching inequality.
