To What Extent Should Law Reflect Morality?

The essay prompt
How far ought the content and validity of the law to be shaped by moral principles? Should the legal system actively enforce a community's morality, or confine itself to a narrower task and leave private moral choices alone?
The stance
Law should reflect morality only partially. At its foundations it must track a thin core of near-universal moral values (human dignity, equality, the wrong of gratuitous violence) to retain legitimacy; but beyond preventing harm to others it should resist enforcing contested private morality, because in a plural society legal moralism collapses into the tyranny of the majority.
The case for
Core legitimacy requires moral grounding: law that abandons basic morality is mere organised coercion.
A legal system that licensed murder, slavery or torture could compel obedience but could not command genuine allegiance. The natural-law tradition captures this: Aquinas, in the Summa Theologiae, held that an unjust law is 'not law but a perversion of law'. After 1945 the Nuremberg trials rejected the 'following orders' defence, treating certain moral limits as binding even on validly enacted domestic law. At the level of fundamental human rights, then, law must reflect morality or forfeit its authority.
The case against
Whose morality? Pluralism makes a single enforceable morality impossible to identify.
If law must reflect morality, the immediate problem is which morality: a religious majority's, a secular liberal's, an inherited tradition's? On abortion and assisted dying, sincere citizens disagree at the level of first principles. Tying legal content to 'the' moral truth invites the state to pick winners in disputes that have no neutral answer, which is why a measure of separation between law and contested morality protects liberty.
