Do designated 'safe spaces' at universities help or hinder open debate and the inclusion of every student's voice? Take a clear position and defend it.
The stance
Safe spaces are beneficial for free expression, but only on one precise condition: that they are understood as protection from harassment rather than from disagreement. A space that bars intimidation widens participation and so enlarges debate; a space that bars ideas because they wound narrows it. The case for them therefore stands or falls on the line between harm and offence.
The case for
Psychological safety is a precondition for participation, not a substitute for it
Free expression is hollow if a section of the room is too intimidated to use it. Where harassment is credible, targeted students self-censor and withdraw before any debate begins, and a formally 'open' forum simply amplifies the loudest. FIRE's 2024 survey of 55,102 students found 1 in 5 felt unable to express an opinion for fear of how peers, staff or administrators would react. A space that removes intimidation does not subtract speakers; it adds them. The freedom to speak is empty without the freedom to be heard.
The case against
Safe spaces can shield students from ideas, not just from harm
The University of Chicago's 2015 Statement (the Stone Report), now adopted by 110-plus institutions, rejects safe spaces precisely because civility cannot be a reason to suppress ideas that some find 'offensive, unwise, immoral or wrong-headed'. If a 'safe' space comes to mean a space free of disagreement, it inverts the university's purpose: exposure to challenging views is the education, and insulating students from them produces fragility, not inclusion.
