Would Everyone Benefit From a Stint of Manual Labour?

The essay prompt
It is sometimes claimed that everyone would be improved by spending a period doing hard physical work. Is that true, and what follows from it? Argue for or against.
The stance
No. The claim is a generous-sounding generalisation that collapses on contact with human difference. Manual labour can teach some people humility, gratitude or resilience, but "everyone" spans the disabled, the chronically ill, the elderly and the already-exhausted poor, for whom a compulsory "stint" ranges from useless to actively harmful. Where the benefit is real it must be tailored to ability, which concedes the universality the claim depends on; and if the stint were made compulsory, the law of forced labour would rightly treat it as an exception requiring justification, not a self-evident good. The honest position is that hard work has uneven, conditional value, and that dignifying labour is better achieved by improving the conditions of those who already do it than by sending everyone else to sample it.
The case for
Manual work can build empathy across class lines and puncture entitlement.
Someone who has never carried, dug or stood for a ten-hour shift may genuinely misjudge the cost of the goods and services they consume. A stint can convert an abstract awareness of others' work into a felt one, and the felt version is harder to forget. The case for the claim is strongest here: not that hardship ennobles, but that it informs, and an informed citizen may legislate and consume more decently.
The case against
"Everyone" is not a homogeneous body, and a single prescription cannot fit it.
The word does the damage. A disabled person, a heart patient, a frail pensioner and a pregnant worker are all part of "everyone," and for them a genuine stint of construction or farm labour is not a lesson but a hazard. Mill's argument in On Liberty that individuality matters precisely because people differ in what helps and harms them applies directly: what builds one person's character injures another's body. Once the task must be softened to fit the weakest participant, it is no longer the demanding manual labour the claim invokes, and the universality quietly evaporates.
