Should Athletes Who Take Drugs Be Banned for Life?

The essay prompt
Some argue that any athlete caught using performance-enhancing drugs should be permanently barred from their sport. Is a lifetime ban a fair and effective response to doping, or does justice demand something more measured?
The stance
No. A lifetime ban for doping is disproportionate, treats unequal fault as equal, forecloses rehabilitation, and is not even what the harmonised anti-doping system actually does. Sport's integrity is better protected by graded, intent-sensitive, rehabilitative sanctions than by permanent exile imposed on a first offence.
The case for
Deterrence and zero tolerance: only the threat of permanent exile is severe enough to stop doping.
Elite sport offers enormous rewards for cheating, and sophisticated, sometimes state-run, doping programmes are hard to detect. A lifetime ban, the argument runs, removes any expected payoff: if the downside is the end of your career, the rational athlete will not risk it. The Armstrong saga shows how far organised doping can go, and proponents say only the harshest sanction expresses genuine zero tolerance.
The case against
Disproportionality: a lifetime ban collapses the distinction between fraud and negligence.
Doping spans a moral spectrum. Lance Armstrong ran what USADA called the most sophisticated doping programme sport has seen and was rightly banned for life; Maria Sharapova tested positive for meldonium months after it was newly prohibited and had CAS reduce her ban to fifteen months for no significant fault. To impose the same irrevocable sanction on both conflates negligence with calculated fraud. Proportionality measures culpability, not just consequence, so a blanket lifetime rule violates the very standard its defenders invoke.
